Mulan is a 1998 animated feature film produced by Walt Disney Feature Animation, and released by Walt Disney Pictures on June 19, 1998. The thirty-sixth animated feature in the Disney Animated Canon and the ninth film in the Disney Renaissance, the film is based on the Chinese legend of Hua Mulan, and was the first of three produced primarily at the animation studio at Disney-MGM Studios in Orlando, Florida. It was directed by Tony Bancroft and Barry Cook, with the story by Robert D. San Souci and Rita Hsiao, among others. While the film today is very popular among the millennial generation, many of which praise it for being the most progressive Disney Princess film, the film did only modestly well at the box office; its success did not quite reach the standards of previous Disney Renaissance movies, such as Beauty and the Beast, Aladdin, and The Lion King. Plot The Huns, led by the ruthless Shan Yu, invade China, breaching the Great Wall via grappling hooks. This prompts a panicked soldier to light the sentry fires. As a result of the invasion, each family is given a conscription notice. On the same day Fa Mulan 's meeting with the local matchmaker goes awry, her father, Fa Zhou, is ordered to serve in the army. Due to his age and previous war injuries, however, it is unlikely he will survive. Against her family's wishes, Mulan secretly disguises herself as a man, then takes her father's conscription notice, armor, and weapons so that he will not have to go. She rides away on her horse, Khan, to join the army, knowing that if she gets caught she will be killed, as women are strictly forbidden from joining on pain of death. Mushu, a small Chinese dragon, has been awakened by the family's First Ancestor. Mushu had been demoted to gong ringer after a mishap with one of the ancestors from the last time they were awakened. After various choices of which guardian to send after Mulan, he is asked to awaken the " Great Stone Dragon ". Mushu accidentally destroys the Dragon but realizes that this could be an opportunity to earn his place among the guardians again if he can make Mulan a war hero. Cri-Kee joins him in this task. In the meantime, Shan Yu and the Huns pillage a city on the way to the Imperial Palace. Leaving the wreckage, they locate two spies. Shan Yu asks them to send a message to the Emperor telling him that the Huns are coming and are ready to engage the Imperial armies. However, as they leave, Shan Yu orders his archer to murder one. Despite bad advice from Mushu leading to a rocky start at the training camp, Mulan (under the alias "Ping") trains with a group led by Captain Li Shang, including fellow soldiers Ling, Yao, and Chien Po, and slowly earns their respect and trust. At some point during this, Shan Yu's falcon, Hayabusa, uncovers a doll from a mountain village, revealing that the Imperial army is waiting for them. One of the Elite Hun Soldiers claims that it will be easy to avoid the ambush, but Shan Yu insists they proceed through the mountains, remarking they should "return" the doll to its rightful owner. Soon after this event, the troops complete their training, but Chi Fu, the Emperor's meddling and misogynistic advisor, refuses to let them see battle, accusing the troops of being ill-prepared. Mushu forges a letter from the General, ordering Shang to take his men to battle. The troops set out to meet General Li, who has already left on a mission. However, Shang and his troops tragically discover that his father, the general and his men were killed in battle against Shan Yu. As they leave, Mulan finds the doll Shan Yu found and places it in front of the General's grave marker. Shang and his troops continue, disheartened by their loss, when they are ambushed by Hun archers due to a misfired cannon. After an initial attack, the Huns are believed to be defeated, but the troops soon discover otherwise, and Shan Yu orders a massive cavalry charge to finish off the remaining men. While the rest of the troops set up the last cannon to fire at Shan Yu to cut the head off the snake, Mulan spots a precarious mound of snow on the upper mountainside. During the charge, Mulan snatches the cannon and fires the rocket at the snow mound on the mountainside. It hits the mound near the summit and triggers a large avalanche, spreading all over and swallowing the now fleeing Huns, including Shan-Yu, burying them. Shang's soldiers take refuge while Mulan rescues Shang from being swept away by the snow and falling off a cliff. The Chinese soldiers initially cheer for their victory, but quickly become somber after Mulan discovers that she is bleeding; she had been wounded by a swipe of Shan Yu's sword before the avalanche buried Shan Yu and his army. Shang quickly summons a doctor just as Mulan faints. During treatment, Mulan's true identity is discovered. Shang is notified and is expected to execute Mulan. Instead, he spares her life (she having saved his own life during the avalanche), and promptly expels her from the army. Shang and his troops promptly continue their path to the capital, leaving Mulan behind. Mulan decides to return home, but spots the Huns emerging from the snow from the avalanche. She tries to warn Shang's troops as they are heralded by citizens in a parade for their war efforts, but they do not listen. As the Emperor ( Pat Morita) addresses the crowd, the Huns, disguised as parade characters, kidnap him and barricade themselves inside the palace. Shang and his troops try to follow the Huns into the palace but are unsuccessful. Mulan devises a ploy with the other soldiers to dress as concubines, scale one of the palace walls and infiltrate the palace. When the Huns lower their defenses in the presence of the "women", Mulan and her allies swiftly dispatch them all. During this attack, Shan Yu demands the Emperor bow before him, but the Emperor calmly rebuffs him. Before Shan Yu can kill the Emperor, Shang intervenes and the Emperor is safely removed from the palace by Chien Po. Unfortunately, Shang and Mulan are now trapped on the balcony with Shan Yu. Shan Yu is about to kill Shang when Mulan gets his attention with her shoe. He recognizes her from the mountain battle and gives chase. Mulan lures him onto the palace rooftop where they face each other in personal combat, until Mushu, as arranged by Mulan, launches a huge firecracker that hits Shan Yu and carries him off to his death. The fate of the remaining five Hun warriors is never fully disclosed. The Emperor meets Mulan and, in an accusatory tone, lists Mulan's crimes, but nevertheless pardons her for saving China and himself. The Emperor then bows to Mulan, which is considered an extremely high honor as it implies being of a higher status than the Emperor, while the hundreds of observers kow-tow (an Eastern bowing position with one's face and palms to the floor). The Emperor then offers Mulan a position among his staff (even offering to have her replace Chi-Fu). Though certainly flattered by the offer, Mulan politely declines it, explaining that she'd rather go back home to her family. The Emperor accepts this, and he gives her Shan Yu 's sword, along with his crest, for her to bring home and give honor to her family. Upon her return, Mulan expects to be reprimanded but is instead embraced by her family. Shang arrives to talk with Mulan, having been encouraged to tell her his feelings for her by the Emperor. The ancestors reluctantly agree to make Mushu a guardian once more and celebration ensues. Production Development for Mulan began in 1994, after the production team sent a select group of artistic supervisors to China for three weeks to take photographs and drawings of local landmarks for inspiration; and to soak up local culture The filmmakers decided to change Mulan's character to make her more appealing and selfless and turn the art style closer to Chinese painting, with watercolor and simpler design - opposed to the details of The Lion King and The Hunchback of Notre Dame. To create 2, 000 Hun soldiers during the Huns' attack sequence, the production team developed a crowd simulation software called Attila. This software allows thousands of unique characters to move autonomously. A variant of the program called Dynasty was used in the final battle sequence to create a crowd of 3, 000 in the Forbidden City. Pixar 's photorealistic RenderMan was used to render the crowd. Another software developed for this movie was Faux Plane which was used to add depth to flat two-dimensional painting. Although developed late in production progress, Faux Plane was used in five shots, including the dramatic sequence which features the Great Wall of China, and the final battle sequence when Mulan runs to the Forbidden City. During the scene in which the Chinese are bowing to Mulan, the crowd is a panoramic film of real people bowing. It was edited into the animated foreground of the scene. He appears to be one of the few who could appease Yao; mainly by the means of calming him down by holding him up and telling him to chant with him. James Hong as Chi-Fu, a misogynistic member of the Emperor's council and advisor to Li Shang who refuses to allow the recruits to join the battle against the Huns. Stephen Wong described the visuals as "stunning, " Kyle Suggs described the visuals as "breathtaking, " and Dan Jardine described the visuals as "magnificently animated. " Many praise the movie for attempting something new. Fa Mulan is unlike a traditional Disney heroine, suggesting that she is independent and brave; without being overtly glamorous. Film critic Roger Ebert gave Mulan three and a half stars out of four in his written review. He said that " Mulan is an impressive achievement, with a story and treatment ranking with Beauty and the Beast and The Lion King ". A negative review described it as a "disappointment. " The songs are accused of not being memorable, and slowing down the pace of the movie. Some reviewers suggest that the film is "soulless" in its portrayal of Asian society. This movie was also the subject of comment from feminist critics. Mimi Nguyen says the film "pokes fun at the ultimately repressive gender roles that seek to make Mulan a domesticated creature. " Nadya Labi agrees, saying "there is a lyric in the film that gives the lie to the bravado of the entire girl-power movement. " She pointed out that she needed to become a boy to do it. Kathleen Karlyn, an assistant professor of English at the University of Oregon, criticizes it suggesting "In order to even imagine female heroism, we're placing it in the realm of fantasy". Pam Coats, producer of Mulan, aimed to produce a character that exhibits both masculine and feminine influences, being both physically and mentally strong. Box office performance Mulan's opening weekend box office figures were $22. 8 million, placing it as the second highest grossing movie that week to The X-Files. It went on to make $120 million domestically and $304 million worldwide, placing it the second highest family film of the year, behind A Bug's Life, and the 7th highest of the year overall. However, these figures were criticized as being a significant decrease from former Disney films, and this was considered a sign of the decreasing popularity of cartoon animation. Top international releases include the United Kingdom ($14. 6 million) and France ($10. 2 million). Awards Mulan won many Annie Awards. The film itself won the award for Best Animated Theatrical Feature. Jerry Goldsmith won the 1999 BMI Film Music Award and was nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Score in 1998. Wilder and Zippel were also nominated for a Golden Globe Award for Best Original Song the same year for " Reflection ". They were beaten by The Truman Show and " The Prayer " from Quest for Camelot respectively. Reception in China Disney was keen to promote Mulan to the Chinese, hoping they might replicate their success with their 1994 film The Lion King, which was one of the country's highest-grossing Western films at that time. Disney also hoped it might smooth over relations with the Chinese government which had soured after the release of Kundun, a Disney-funded biography of the Dalai Lama that the Chinese government considered politically provocative. China had threatened to curtail business negotiations with Disney over that film and, as the government only accepts 10 Western films per year to be shown in their country, Mulan 's chances of being accepted were low. Finally, after a year's delay, the Chinese government did allow the film a limited Chinese release, but only after the Chinese New Year, so as to ensure that local films dominated the more lucrative holiday market. Chinese culture in Mulan The Legend of Hua Mulan The Chinese legend of Hua Mulan centers on a young woman who disguises herself as a man to take the place of her elderly father in the army. The story can be traced back to The Ballad of Mulan. The earliest accounts of the legend state that she lived during the Northern Wei dynasty (386–534). However another version reports that Mulan was requested as a concubine by Emperor Yang of Sui China (reigned 604–617). The film may take place even later, as it prominently features landmarks such as the Forbidden City which was not constructed until the 15th Century. On the other hand, at the time of Northern Wei, the Xiongnu (Huns) had been already absorbed into Chinese culture. However, according to the style of dress (traditional Han clothing), the film takes place sometime in the 15th century or before. The fireworks featured in the movie indicate that the movie is set during the Sui dynasty. Although Mulan is set in north China, where the dominant language is Mandarin, the Disney film uses the Cantonese pronunciation, "Fa", of her family name. In Mandarin her name is pronounced "Hua". Disney's Mulan casts the title character in much the same way as the original legend, a tomboy daughter of a respected veteran, somewhat troubled by being the "sophisticated lady" her society expects her to be after failing the matchmaker's training, dishonoring Mulan's family. In the original Mulan legend, Mulan uses her father's name Li and not the name "Ping" and she was never discovered as a girl, unlike the film. Also in the original legend, Mulan went to war for her father, because her father was getting too old to fight, and had no sons to take his place. However, in the film, it was added that her father's leg was injured. Language The script used for most of the text in Mulan is Traditional Chinese, which is no longer used in daily life on Mainland China (but still used in Hong Kong, Macau, and many overseas Chinese communities), although people are still able to read it. The traditional name for the leaders of the Central Asian Huns was Shanyu. The war between the Huns and China was real, called the Sino-Xiongnu War. When Mulan masquerades as a man, her name is a pun in Chinese. Her first name is "Ping" (瓶), meaning pot, and her surname (placed first using Chinese naming conventions) means Flower (花). Together they make "Flowerpot", a Chinese term meaning an effeminate man. According to Orpheus in Mayfair and Other Stories and Sketches by Maurice Baring, "Ping" in Chinese means soldier-man, and if you wish to express your contempt for a man there is no word in the whole of the Chinese language which expresses it so fully and so emphatically as the word Ping. A., California, created by Disney's Studio in Florida. Mulan was almost a PG movie but went by different standards to get G. If it had been rated PG, it would have been the second Disney movie to be rated this after The Black Cauldron and the first Disney Princess movie to be rated PG. During the avalanche, Mulan's helmet gets blown off and Shang's horse disappears but are both seen later in the film. It took five years to make Mulan. The movie was almost a short movie titled China Doll until Robert D. San Souci came along. Mulan was originally supposed to be betrothed to a wealthy man but this was changed so that it would not seem she was joining the army for selfish reasons. When the troops discover that the Huns destroyed a village in the Tung Shao Pass, numerous dead bodies of soldiers can be seen, making Mulan the only Disney movie that shows numerous dead bodies. The original theatrical release poster for Mulan makes a cameo in Nani 's bedroom in Lilo & Stitch. Lea Salonga, who sings as Mulan, sang as Jasmine. There was supposed to be a Mulan 3 released in 2006, but it was canceled. The earliest extant text of the poem comes from an 11th- or 12th-century anthology known as the Music Bureau Collection ( Chinese: 樂府詩; pinyin: Yuèfǔshī). Its author, Guo Maoqian, explicitly mentions the Musical Records of Old and New as his source for the poem. As a ballad, the lines do not necessarily have equal numbers of syllables. The poem starts with Mulan sitting worriedly at her loom, as one male from each family is called to serve in the army to defend the Tuoba realm from Rouran invaders. Her father is old and weak, and her younger brother is just a child, so she decides to take his place and bids farewell to her parents, who support her. She is already skilled in fighting, having been taught martial arts, sword fighting, and archery by the time she enlists in the army. [10] (In reality, Dou Jiande was executed, but in the novel he lives on as a monk. ) Mulan is given leave to journey back to her homeland, and once arrangements were made for Mulan's parents to relocate, it is expected that they will all be living in the princess's old capital of Leshou ( Chinese: 樂壽, modern Xian County, Hebei). Mulan is devastated to discover her father has long died and her mother has remarried. According to the novel, Mulan's mother was surnamed Yuan (袁) and remarried a man named Wei (魏). Even worse, the Khan has summoned her to the palace to become his concubine. Rather than suffer this fate, she commits suicide. But before she dies, she entrusts an errand to her younger sister, Youlan ( Chinese: 又蘭), which was to deliver Xianniang's letter to her fiancé, Luó Chéng. This younger sister dresses as a man to make her delivery, but her disguise is discovered, and it arouses her recipient's amorous attention. Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker needed to be two movies long to truly do the story and. characters justice. Credit: Disney / LucasFilm Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker has been a controversial film, to say the least. Almost—if not more so—than the controversial The Last Jedi. There are many reasons for this, but one of the big ones is just how rushed the first act feels. You get a whole lot of plot in a very short span of time—story that could have been spread out if there were only more time. It often feels like director JJ Abrams had two movies he wanted to make, but because the previous film was written and directed by Rian Johnson, he had to take both those movies and cram them into one. I was still a big fan of The Rise Of Skywalker. I found the critical reception—its still Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes— quite baffling, a reactionary response to some of the changes ( or fixes) Abrams made after The Last Jedi. Indeed, despite the rushed first act, and despite other quibbles like the weird sidelining of Rose Tico, I thought this was the most emotionally powerful film in the new trilogy. Many complained about it having too much fan service, but I loved that about the movie. It wasnt as fun as The Force Awakens or as subversive as The Last Jedi (both films I enjoyed) but it had so many great Star Wars moments. I just wish it had been two movies instead of one. It very badly needed more time to get to where it was going, and theres no denying that Rise felt rushed. Even co-writer Chris Terrio wishes that it had been two films, telling Awards Daily: “I wish we could have done that. There is a lot of plot in the movie, and as a writer, you always want scenes to let the plot breathe more. If there were a way of doing it, splitting it would have been my dream. We could have written these characters forever. There was so much backstory that had to be left by the wayside. I wish that we could have that, but George always said it was nine movies. That was the natural size of the saga, and so, other than a few initial discussions, we never really advanced that conversation. Of course, as a writer, it breaks your heart to leave stuff on the table that you think would have given the story more depth and nuance and to give the characters more to do. Speaking for myself and not on the part of the studio, I do wish there could have been a “Part 1” and a “Part 2. ”” I understand respecting George Lucass vision to some degree. I would understand it more had he not so badly botched his own original Star Wars trilogy with bad CGI additions. Disney is respecting his desire not to release the original, untouched trilogy despite the clamoring of fans, and frankly I find that absurd. If you sell your company and its properties to the tune of 4 billion, you shouldnt attach many strings. Kylo Ren Lucas wanted the Skywalker Saga to be nine films. If hed had it his way, the third trilogy would have been all about Midichlorians: “[The next three Star Wars films] were going to get into a microbiotic world. But theres this world of creatures that operate differently than we do. I call them the Whills. And the Whills are the ones who actually control the universe. They feed off the Force… If Id held onto the company I could have done it, and then it would have been done. Of course, a lot of the fans would have hated it, just like they did Phantom Menace and everything, but at least the whole story from beginning to end would be told. ” Thats from the companion book to James Camerons Story of Science Fiction series. Lucas continues: “Back in the day, I used to say ultimately what this means is we were just cars, vehicles for the Whills to travel around in…re vessels for them. And the conduit is the midichlorians. The midichlorians are the ones that communicate with the Whills. The Whills, in a general sense, they are the Force… All the way back to—with the Force and the Jedi and everything—the whole concept of how things happen was laid out completely from [the beginning] to the end. But I never got to finish. I never got to tell people about it. ” In other words, as angry as fans may be about the new trilogy it could have been so much worse. If Lucas had his way, everything good and fun and wonderful about the original Star Wars movies would be lost. The joyless prequel trilogy would look like a work of art compared to this nonsense about the Whills. Its as if Lucas doesnt—and never really did—understand what fans actually liked about these movies. His plan from the prequels onward, and certainly into the sequel trilogy, would have been to essentially take all the myth and spirituality out of Star Wars. To demystify it and get into the science of the Force rather than its magic, to transform a space opera into science fiction. The Rise Of Skywalker Abrams, for all the issues with his two entries in the sequel trilogy, seems to understand it very well. He just wasnt able to quite execute his vision in the span of two films. I dont blame Johnson for this either. The Last Jedi had some issues, but I very much enjoyed his handling of Luke, Kylo Ren and Rey and dont actually think that The Rise Of Skywalker contradicts any of that. But it can come off that way because it feels rushed. Some accused Johnson of trying to subvert and demystify Star Wars, but at least his version maintains, in the end, the heroism of Luke Skywalker and the mystery of the Force. It isnt reason enough to cap the saga at nine movies, simply because Lucas always envisioned it that way. Plans change as stories evolve. Sure, in the beginning it was going to be nine movies (well not the very beginning, but as soon as it was a hit and became more than a single outing. In the beginning, in the first drafts for the first Star Wars film, Han Solo was a green alien and Luke Skywalker was a middle-aged general. Plans changed. Other writers and collaborators and directors and artists and special effects people helped shape the original trilogy. It would not have been the same without people like Lawrence Kasdan on board. If The Rise Of Skywalker had been two movies, we could have spent one discovering the return of Palpatine, and gone into more depth about the rise of the First Order and the deception of Snoke. We could have spent more time with the Knights of Ren and Kylo Rens search for the ghoulish Emperor. Ren and Reys relationship could have been developed even further. Better yet, the relationships between Finn, Poe, Rey and other characters like Rose Tico, the droids and so forth could have all deepened. Perhaps the greatest flaw of the new trilogy is its lack of relationship development between its core cast. Spending time to flesh that out and deepen those relationships is more important than respecting some arbitrary number of films dreamed up by George Lucas. Rey The second film could have focused on the bulk of the plot from Rise of Skywalker. With our characters now more firmly established, a new villain discovered by the end of the movie, and the stakes set, it could have taken its time. More hints and foreshadowing about Reys true parentage could have been established, with the final reveal taking place either at the end of the ninth film (a la Empire Strikes Back) or in the final installment. Sometimes splitting a film into two parts can come off as a greedy, a cash grab by studios desperate to capitalize on a valuable franchise. The Hobbit was split into three films entirely because of greed as far as Im concerned. But in this case it would have simply been smart film-making and the wiser storytelling choice. Fans and critics alike would almost certainly have responded better to the story and nobody, except perhaps George Lucas, would have cared that another movie was added to the Skywalker Saga. If we all had one more to look forward to in 2021, Id shed no tears. Alas, here we are. I still loved The Rise Of Skywalker and really enjoyed the new trilogy, warts and all. But Im not blind to its shortcomings. Perhaps simply establishing all of this from the beginning and having a unified direction and story would have avoided all these problems and made nine films just right. But that wasnt the case, and clearly wasnt the case by the time production began on Episode IX. Too bad they didnt just take a gamble and give us an Episode X to wrap things up. P. S. Perhaps the rumored “Abrams Cut” of the film resolves some of these issues, but Im still not at all convinced of its veracity. Nor am I convinced that a three hour Star Wars movie is a great idea. Again, two two-ish hour movies would be much better.

Star Wars: Episode IX swerves hard to retcon The Last Jedi's story. However you felt about The Last Jedi, at least it had something to say. With the much-maligned Star Wars: Episode VIII, director Rian Johnson attempted to make a statement about the insipid allure of nostalgia and an over-reliance on the past. Many fans agree it didn't stick the landing, but the parts that arguably worked- like Kylo and Rey's intimate rivalry, or Luke's shocking cynicism and triumphant redemption- successfully remixed familiar Star Wars tropes into something that felt new-ish. Unfortunately, The Rise of Skywalker director J. J. Abrams doesn't seem to have fully grasped Johnson's message in The Last Jedi- that we have to "let the past die" to move forward. Johnson sought to establish a fresh direction for the Star Wars saga, but in Rise, Abrams is interested in killing only the parts of the past that he disagrees with. Instead of continuing down the path that Johnson set, Abrams swerves the franchise into yet another hard u-turn, cramming enough story for two movies into one, and largely acting like the previous film never happened- or actively retconning it. The result is a movie that feels less like the conclusion to a Star Wars trilogy, and more like the casualty of a behind-the-scenes battle between the visions of two diametrically opposed directors. Rise of Skywalker bends over backward to undo what The Last Jedi did, just as that movie subverted all the mysteries set up in The Force Awakens. But much more than its predecessor, Rise of Skywalker exudes petulance- like Abrams is mad someone played with his toys wrong, and his only remaining recourse is to scoop them all up and go home. Rise establishes in its opening crawl that the galaxy has received a mysterious transmission from Emperor Palpatine (something that would have been exciting to actually see onscreen. Rey ( Daisy Ridley) continues her training under General Leia Organa ( Carrie Fisher) while Finn ( John Boyega) Poe ( Oscar Isaac) and Chewie ( Joonas Suotamo) rendezvous with an alleged First Order mole who wants to feed them information. Kylo Ren ( Adam Driver) meanwhile, searches for the former Emperor, who he considers a threat to his power. From there, the story leaps at lightspeed between set pieces, from an alien version of Coachella to encounters with fantastic creatures that rarely last more than a few moments. As the movie progresses, it makes less and less sense. Rise takes great pains to hastily establish answers and payoffs for mysteries established in The Force Awakens, waving away plot points from The Last Jedi with repeated dumps of confusing dialogue. Events that should be monumental are immediately undercut or undone, without breathing room for the audience to absorb what's taking place. Characters you thought must certainly be dead pop up later inexplicably unharmed, while others simply keel over with little explanation. Uncanny CG puppets of familiar actors' younger selves haunt flashbacks to better times. What should be the movie's most emotional moments are undermined by the weight of exasperating absurdity. Unsurprisingly, Rise of Skywalker is- like both movies that came before it- gorgeous to look at, beautifully scored, and extremely impressive in a technical sense. But to watch this movie for the first time while still harboring any small hope that it might pull the whole conceited mess together in the end is to subject yourself to frustration, disillusionment, and emotional whiplash. There's a reason that hope existed at all: Flawed as it may be, The Force Awakens did a lot right in the world-building and character department. Beneath Episode IX's disregard for coherent storytelling are the bones- like the Death Star's sunken wreckage- of a compelling conclusion to this saga. Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo are great characters; what they lack are actual character arcs. Rey's life as a scavenger lends her some unique skills, for example, but she spends an inordinate amount of time in this movie simply wandering off, face vacant, while her friends are in danger. Or take Finn- these movies have never actually bothered to dig into his past as an indoctrinated Stormtrooper, and, in fact, Rise actively trivializes this backstory at a pivotal moment when it could have explored it further. The group's dynamic is strong when they're together, but fun banter isn't enough to cover for the fact that these characters have rarely spent actual time with one another onscreen or been fleshed out beyond the surface level. Leia's presence is unsettling. Granted, it's no one's fault that the great Carrie Fisher was unable to complete this journey with us. But her scenes in this movie are filled with nonsequiturs, dialogue that was clearly ripped from previous films' unused footage and then re-contextualized with new conversations written around them. Other legacy characters, like Lando Calrissian ( Billy Dee Williams) C-3PO ( Anthony Daniels) and Chewie, are treated with varying degrees of respect, and their inclusions are often irrelevant and occasionally nonsensical (you'll struggle to figure out why Lando pops up where and when he does, for example. And don't forget about Palpatine himself (once again played by Ian McDiarmid) who has indeed returned, and- well, let's just say you're going to have a lot of questions when it's over. Star Wars Episode IX: The Riser of Skywalker And forget about any of the less central characters; Rose ( Kelly Marie Tran) who was introduced in TLJ, is present, but has about as many lines as the background character played by an actor from Lost making a cameo. New faces like Zorii Bliss ( Keri Russell, whose face is never actually seen) and Jannah ( Naomi Ackie) get a few lines of dialogue each before being casually tossed into the blender and mixed into the background of the rest of the film. New creatures like the infantile puppet Babu Frik and the droid D-O (who turns out to be almost literally a kicked puppy) are charming, but lack depth. Like so much of what gets established in this movie, they're utterly pointless. That adds to the sense that Abrams is trying to cram the plot of two movies into the space of one. In a hypothetical alternate timeline where J. kept control of the whole trilogy, he could have left room between this film's abundant reveals and introductions for the characters to interact naturally and for the weight of emotional twists and turns to settle in before yanking the rug out from under audiences yet again. Instead, Rise rushes at breakneck speed to end each scene and get to the next, never stopping to savor any victory or process any loss or defeat. It adds up to a pale cover of Star Wars' greatest hits- dramatic lightsaber duel, ancient artifact scavenger hunt, epic space battle- chewed up and spit out as a series of loosely related vignettes connected by clumsy dialogue and nonsensical plotting. The icing on top is a layer of cloying, saccharine sentimentality that Abrams uses to messily spackle in the story's cracks. At one point the characters choose to rely on a plan that already failed them in The Last Jedi, and not only does no one acknowledge that- but it inexplicably works this time, because this movie's condescendingly optimistic tone demands that it must, continuity and logic be damned. At the same time, Rise gleefully plays fast and loose with rules and laws that earlier movies established decades ago, like Jedi and Sith powers, or the capabilities of "force ghosts. Rise even has its own version of the notorious Midi-chlorian- in other words, another new plot device that didn't need to be articulated in the first place getting over-explained to the point of self-parody. In the end, it all feels simply empty. It should never be so clear to audiences that something in the filmmaking process has gone so terribly wrong- that the people who made the first film in a trilogy apparently didn't bother to sketch out a plan for the second and third, and that the movies' directors had visions for the series' future that were so fundamentally at odds. I learned that lighthouses are the most beautiful thing when you're returning from sea - they say, you'll be home soon, and you'll be safe. At night the beam of light would sweep overhead, cutting through the fog - and every minute or so the foghorn would sound; I knew then that in maybe 10 hours I'd be back on land, finally. I also found that all lighthouses are very. very haunted; usually by the keepers and their families. Many times I've walked up the metal steps only to hear footsteps behind me, even though I was the only person in the lighthouse. I'd look over the rail to try and figure out what was going on, only to see a translucent 'shadow' of a person looking up at me. Those Wickies took their job very, very seriously - carrying 60lbs of whale oil up 300 steps maybe 3-4x/day just to keep the light lit. Those men were considered angels by mariners...
