Say what you want about the prequels (I personally loved them, perhaps due to growing up with them) but at least they were made with passion and heart which tied together probably the greatest saga in movie history.
The sequels are a blatant cash grab playing off fans' nostalgia whilst ruining the story and lore of the first 6 movies.
This only positives I can take from this film is that it is visually stunning, the score is incredible and that it's a much better film than the train wreck 'The Last Jedi.
Right now onto the negatives.
1) Force healing. FORCE HEALING. I'm not against new force abilities but they need some explanation as to why the users are able to utilize them and why they weren't utilized in earlier films. So Obi Wan just let Qui Gon die? Why didn't Anakin just use the force to save Padme? Why did Anakin have to learn the dark side of the force to learn that power whereas Rey and Kylo both naturally have that ability with no explanation.
2) Force most of the film internally screaming Han Solo's line "that's not how the force works!
3) Palpatine is back! How? Look Palpatine is back! Why? No look palpatine is back! Literally no explanation as to how he survived episode 6 or why he waited 30 years or why he used Snoke, etc. He's just back because nostalgia and to give Rey a villain to beat. Also makes Anakin's story pointless. The rise, fall and redemption of Anakin, but that doesn't matter because the bad guy comes back.
4) No Anakin. Star Wars 1-6 is a story about Anakin Skywalker. This probably disappointed me the most that ghost Anakin didn't pop up to see Kylo, Rey or anyone. This is obviously a personal preference but I would've loved to see a scene with Anakin and Luke, or at the very least in the last scene for Anakin to be with Luke and Leia.
5) Unnecessary cousin kiss.
6) Convenient evil dagger. It makes zero sense that it matched up perfectly with the fallen death star. The dagger was presumably made before the death star was destroyed so how would it match up? And if it was made after the death star was destroyed why was it even made? Has Palpatine got memory loss or something? Just a complete mess.
7) Endgame 2.0. Honestly Lando might have well said "on your left. I know VII and VIII ripped off other Star Wars films but now Disney have ripped off other Disney films. Also why didn't all those good guys just come together in TFA. br> I know each to their own opinion but it baffles me how Star Wars fans enjoyed this film. And those who call people who criticize this film "haters" or claim that "they had their mind made up before watching" is very ignorant. I really enjoyed TFA and I was really optimistic about the new trilogy. I REALLY wanted to enjoy this film to the point I was trying convince myself that it was a good film but overall the new trilogy just doesn't feel like Star Wars to me.

Star wars: episode ix - the rise of skywalker free stream. Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker needed to be two movies long to truly do the story and. characters justice. Credit: Disney / LucasFilm Star Wars Episode IX: The Rise Of Skywalker has been a controversial film, to say the least. Almost—if not more so—than the controversial The Last Jedi. There are many reasons for this, but one of the big ones is just how rushed the first act feels. You get a whole lot of plot in a very short span of time—story that could have been spread out if there were only more time. It often feels like director JJ Abrams had two movies he wanted to make, but because the previous film was written and directed by Rian Johnson, he had to take both those movies and cram them into one. I was still a big fan of The Rise Of Skywalker. I found the critical reception—its still Rotten on Rotten Tomatoes— quite baffling, a reactionary response to some of the changes ( or fixes) Abrams made after The Last Jedi. Indeed, despite the rushed first act, and despite other quibbles like the weird sidelining of Rose Tico, I thought this was the most emotionally powerful film in the new trilogy. Many complained about it having too much fan service, but I loved that about the movie. It wasnt as fun as The Force Awakens or as subversive as The Last Jedi (both films I enjoyed) but it had so many great Star Wars moments. I just wish it had been two movies instead of one. It very badly needed more time to get to where it was going, and theres no denying that Rise felt rushed. Even co-writer Chris Terrio wishes that it had been two films, telling Awards Daily: “I wish we could have done that. There is a lot of plot in the movie, and as a writer, you always want scenes to let the plot breathe more. If there were a way of doing it, splitting it would have been my dream. We could have written these characters forever. There was so much backstory that had to be left by the wayside. I wish that we could have that, but George always said it was nine movies. That was the natural size of the saga, and so, other than a few initial discussions, we never really advanced that conversation. Of course, as a writer, it breaks your heart to leave stuff on the table that you think would have given the story more depth and nuance and to give the characters more to do. Speaking for myself and not on the part of the studio, I do wish there could have been a “Part 1” and a “Part 2. ”” I understand respecting George Lucass vision to some degree. I would understand it more had he not so badly botched his own original Star Wars trilogy with bad CGI additions. Disney is respecting his desire not to release the original, untouched trilogy despite the clamoring of fans, and frankly I find that absurd. If you sell your company and its properties to the tune of 4 billion, you shouldnt attach many strings. Kylo Ren Lucas wanted the Skywalker Saga to be nine films. If hed had it his way, the third trilogy would have been all about Midichlorians: “[The next three Star Wars films] were going to get into a microbiotic world. But theres this world of creatures that operate differently than we do. I call them the Whills. And the Whills are the ones who actually control the universe. They feed off the Force… If Id held onto the company I could have done it, and then it would have been done. Of course, a lot of the fans would have hated it, just like they did Phantom Menace and everything, but at least the whole story from beginning to end would be told. ” Thats from the companion book to James Camerons Story of Science Fiction series. Lucas continues: “Back in the day, I used to say ultimately what this means is we were just cars, vehicles for the Whills to travel around in…re vessels for them. And the conduit is the midichlorians. The midichlorians are the ones that communicate with the Whills. The Whills, in a general sense, they are the Force… All the way back to—with the Force and the Jedi and everything—the whole concept of how things happen was laid out completely from [the beginning] to the end. But I never got to finish. I never got to tell people about it. ” In other words, as angry as fans may be about the new trilogy it could have been so much worse. If Lucas had his way, everything good and fun and wonderful about the original Star Wars movies would be lost. The joyless prequel trilogy would look like a work of art compared to this nonsense about the Whills. Its as if Lucas doesnt—and never really did—understand what fans actually liked about these movies. His plan from the prequels onward, and certainly into the sequel trilogy, would have been to essentially take all the myth and spirituality out of Star Wars. To demystify it and get into the science of the Force rather than its magic, to transform a space opera into science fiction. The Rise Of Skywalker Abrams, for all the issues with his two entries in the sequel trilogy, seems to understand it very well. He just wasnt able to quite execute his vision in the span of two films. I dont blame Johnson for this either. The Last Jedi had some issues, but I very much enjoyed his handling of Luke, Kylo Ren and Rey and dont actually think that The Rise Of Skywalker contradicts any of that. But it can come off that way because it feels rushed. Some accused Johnson of trying to subvert and demystify Star Wars, but at least his version maintains, in the end, the heroism of Luke Skywalker and the mystery of the Force. It isnt reason enough to cap the saga at nine movies, simply because Lucas always envisioned it that way. Plans change as stories evolve. Sure, in the beginning it was going to be nine movies (well not the very beginning, but as soon as it was a hit and became more than a single outing. In the beginning, in the first drafts for the first Star Wars film, Han Solo was a green alien and Luke Skywalker was a middle-aged general. Plans changed. Other writers and collaborators and directors and artists and special effects people helped shape the original trilogy. It would not have been the same without people like Lawrence Kasdan on board. If The Rise Of Skywalker had been two movies, we could have spent one discovering the return of Palpatine, and gone into more depth about the rise of the First Order and the deception of Snoke. We could have spent more time with the Knights of Ren and Kylo Rens search for the ghoulish Emperor. Ren and Reys relationship could have been developed even further. Better yet, the relationships between Finn, Poe, Rey and other characters like Rose Tico, the droids and so forth could have all deepened. Perhaps the greatest flaw of the new trilogy is its lack of relationship development between its core cast. Spending time to flesh that out and deepen those relationships is more important than respecting some arbitrary number of films dreamed up by George Lucas. Rey The second film could have focused on the bulk of the plot from Rise of Skywalker. With our characters now more firmly established, a new villain discovered by the end of the movie, and the stakes set, it could have taken its time. More hints and foreshadowing about Reys true parentage could have been established, with the final reveal taking place either at the end of the ninth film (a la Empire Strikes Back) or in the final installment. Sometimes splitting a film into two parts can come off as a greedy, a cash grab by studios desperate to capitalize on a valuable franchise. The Hobbit was split into three films entirely because of greed as far as Im concerned. But in this case it would have simply been smart film-making and the wiser storytelling choice. Fans and critics alike would almost certainly have responded better to the story and nobody, except perhaps George Lucas, would have cared that another movie was added to the Skywalker Saga. If we all had one more to look forward to in 2021, Id shed no tears. Alas, here we are. I still loved The Rise Of Skywalker and really enjoyed the new trilogy, warts and all. But Im not blind to its shortcomings. Perhaps simply establishing all of this from the beginning and having a unified direction and story would have avoided all these problems and made nine films just right. But that wasnt the case, and clearly wasnt the case by the time production began on Episode IX. Too bad they didnt just take a gamble and give us an Episode X to wrap things up. P. S. Perhaps the rumored “Abrams Cut” of the film resolves some of these issues, but Im still not at all convinced of its veracity. Nor am I convinced that a three hour Star Wars movie is a great idea. Again, two two-ish hour movies would be much better.

We stand behind you, Rey. – Aayla Secura, seen in Revenge of the Sith, main role in The Clone Wars: Let it guide you. – Mace Windu: Feel the Force flowing through you, Rey. – Adi Gallia, seen in Phantom Menace, main role in The Clone Wars: Rise, Rey. – Yoda: Rise in the Force, Rey. – Luke Skywalker: Rey, the Force will be with you. Always. Snoke (Image credit: LucasFilm) It wasnt quite blink-and-youll-miss-it, but Supreme Leader Snoke got only a brief farewell in Rise of Skywalker. In the opening minutes of the movie, we learn that Palpatine created Snoke, and you can a large vat containing a bunch of Snoke clones. These clones were apparently grown on the Sith planet Exogel.  Han Solo  (Image credit: Disney/LucasFilm) After his lightsaber duel with Rey on the Darth Star II wreckage, Kylo is comforted by the Force Ghost of galaxy's scruffiest nerf-herder, Han Solo. Harrison Ford's return is a genuine gasp-out-loud moment, and his sweet speech is what turns Kylo Ren back to Ben Skywalker. However, Solo, despite potentially being Force-sensitive (confirmed in the comics) does not appear as a Force ghost, but simply as a figment of Kylo's memory. Luke Skywalker (Image credit: Lucasfilm/Disney) Rey attempts to destroy the Sith Wayfinder but is stopped from doing so by none other than Luke Skywalker as a Force Ghost, who chides the young Jedi for her actions. He eventually imparts some words of wisdom, saying that Rey needs to face her destiny – and Palpatine.  Wedge Antilles (Image credit: LucasFilm) Dennis Lawson's Rebel fighter pilot is still blasting away 42 years later. In The Rise of Skywalker, we briefly see him helping to take down the Emperor's Star Destroyer army during the battle of Exogel. The Holby City actor even gets a brief line during all the explosions as well, saying he's happy to fight alongside Lando once more. Admiral Ackbar's Son As the Resistance prepares for one last attack on the Final Order, a very fishy looking guy speaks out. Admiral Ackbar, of course, died during The Last Jedi. This character is actually his son, who was first seen in Star Wars: Allegiance. The character is voiced by The Rise of Skywalker scriptwriter Chris Terrio. Wicket (Image credit: LucasFilm) Cutesy Ewok Wicket (again played by Warwick Davis) makes a brief appearance during the final montage of celebration scenes. He can be seen on Endor flanked by two Ewoks looking out at the fallen Star Destroyer. Abrams as D-O (Image credit: LucasFilm) Cone-headed droid D-O is introduced in the first hour of the film. Previously deactivated on the ship found in the middle of Pasaana, his jittery ramblings make him a perfect foil for comic relief throughout. But doesnt he sound familiar? According to the credits, he was voiced by none other than Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker director J. Abrams. Porgs (Image credit: LucasFilm) The bird-like creatures introduced as inhabitants of Ahch-To/Chewies favourite mid-morning snack in Star Wars: The Last Jedi make a quick return in The Rise of Skywalker. Theyre seen looking on as Luke raises the X-Wing from the sea. Rey's Parents (Image credit: BBC) Reys parents were previously only shown flying away off-screen during Reys vision in The Force Awakens. Here, we find out what they actually look like as they are seen during flashbacks being hunted down by the First Order. Interestingly enough, Reys mother is played by Killing Eve star Jodie Comer, while her dear dad (who's Kylo confirms was a Palpatine) is portrayed by Billy Howle, best known for his roles in Dunkirk and On Chesil Beach. Read more: Why Star Wars: The Rise of Skywalker suffers for lingering on who Rey's parents are Greg Grunberg (Image credit: LucasFilm) Actor Greg Grunberg is a favourite of J. Abrams, having appeared in Lost, Star Trek Beyond, and The Force Awakens. He reprises his Star Wars role as Snap Wexley, and even gets one of the funniest moments of the whole movie, telling General Leia Organa some bad news and being ordered to be more upbeat in his future delivery. Babu Frik – Shirely Henderson (Image credit: Lucasfilm) While new GOAT Babu is hardly a cameo – the little guy's a pretty big plot point in the film's mid-section – the actor behind the voice might surprise you. Shirely Henderson is credited for Babu Frik, and you'll recognise her as Harry Potter's Moaning Myrtle, as well as Gail from Trainspotting.   Droid shop guy – John Williams (Image credit: Getty Images) When the gang goes looking for Babu Frik, they enter his workshop via what looks like a club. The old guy shaking his head disapprovingly in the background is long-time Star Wars composer John Williams, who has scored every main-saga Star Wars instalment. A nice nod to a man responsible for arguably the most iconic scores of all time.  Lin-Manuel Miranda – A random rebel (Image credit: LucasFilm) Hes not got a name, or even a line. Instead, Lin-Manuel Miranda plays random Rebel at the end of the film who's celebrating the team's victory. He wasnt really a secret either, having been clearly identified in an early teaser image when it was announced that he had written some music for one of the planets.  Ed Sheeran – Stormtrooper (Image credit: Disney) Underneath one of those Stormtrooper helmets is internationally renown singer-songwriter Ed Sheeran. Wait, what? According to a pre-release trailer, Sheeran was on set to film a cameo. Where in the film remains a mystery, though no doubt we'll know soon enough. So that's that! Star wars episode ix - the rise of skywalker production budget. Star wars 3a episode ix- the rise of skywalker problems. Image copyright Lucasfilm Image caption Rey, played by Daisy Ridley, returns in The Rise of Skywalker The next Star Wars movie, episode IX, will be titled The Rise of Skywalker, it has been announced. The title was revealed at a Star Wars celebration event in Chicago, while a teaser trailer was posted on Twitter with the words: Every generation has a legend. Director JJ Abrams said the movie is set some time after previous instalment The Last Jedi. The Rise of Skywalker is due to be released later this year. Despite his apparent death at the end of Episode VI, Return of the Jedi, Emperor Palpatine seems to be making a comeback. His sinister cackle is heard at the end of the trailer and Ian McDiarmid, who plays the character, strolled on stage to loud applause at the announcement. The two-minute trailer, the first footage seen from the new film, also features a brief glimpse of Princess Leia, played by the late Carrie Fisher. She embraces Rey (Daisy Ridley) while Luke Skywalker's voice is heard saying: We'll always be with you. No one's ever really gone. Fisher died in 2016 but the filmmakers were able to use previously unseen footage from The Force Awakens. Abrams told a US "Star Wars Celebration" event in Chicago it was a "weird miracle" to be able to continue Princess Leia's story. "Every day it hits me that she's not here, but it's so surreal because we're working with her still. he said. "She's so alive in the scenes and the craziest part is how not crazy it feels. Princess Leia lives in this film in a way that's kind of mind-blowing for me. " The Rise of Skywalker is the third episode of the third set of Star Wars films, which were started by filmmaker George Lucas in 1977. Kathleen Kennedy, the president of Lucasfilm - a subsidiary of Disney that makes the Star Wars films - agreed with the event's panel host Stephen Colbert it was "unprecedented" to tell a story in a nine-film arc. "What's also fascinating is it's over 40 years. she told the event. "To keep this relevant and meaningful to the characters and to the people experiencing this story, it has to feel like its of its time. "We've taken to heart everything that inspired George [Lucas] and then I think the inspiration that JJ's [Abrams] brought to this has given it even more depth. Fans welcomed the reappearance of Lando Calrissian, played by Billy Dee Williams, who is seen piloting the Millennium Falcon. The movie also features the return of John Boyega as Finn, and Oscar Isaac's Poe Dameron. The trailer opens with Rey on a desert planet as Skywalker, played by Mark Hamill, says in a voiceover: We've passed on all we know. A thousand generations live in you now. But this is your fight. She activates her lightsaber as a TIE fighter bears down on her, flying close to the ground. As it reaches her, she backflips over it. Then we see Kylo Ren, played by Adam Driver, slicing through enemies in a blood-red forest. Lando Calrissian appears at the controls of the Millennium Falcon, putting it into hyperdrive as a title card says: The saga comes to an end. " Lando Calrissian is back after appearances in The Empire Strikes Back and Return of the Jedi Heroes including C-3PO are seen being chased across the desert planet in a low-flying craft before the trailer cuts to the shot of Rey hugging Leia. Then we see Rey, Finn, Poe, C-3PO, BB-8 and Chewbacca walking to the edge of a cliff by the sea. Across the water appears to be the wreckage of a Death Star. The trailer's final shot appears to show a wrecked Death Star The film is due to be released on 20 December.

Star Wars: Episode IX swerves hard to retcon The Last Jedi's story. However you felt about The Last Jedi, at least it had something to say. With the much-maligned Star Wars: Episode VIII, director Rian Johnson attempted to make a statement about the insipid allure of nostalgia and an over-reliance on the past. Many fans agree it didn't stick the landing, but the parts that arguably worked- like Kylo and Rey's intimate rivalry, or Luke's shocking cynicism and triumphant redemption- successfully remixed familiar Star Wars tropes into something that felt new-ish. Unfortunately, The Rise of Skywalker director J. J. Abrams doesn't seem to have fully grasped Johnson's message in The Last Jedi- that we have to "let the past die" to move forward. Johnson sought to establish a fresh direction for the Star Wars saga, but in Rise, Abrams is interested in killing only the parts of the past that he disagrees with. Instead of continuing down the path that Johnson set, Abrams swerves the franchise into yet another hard u-turn, cramming enough story for two movies into one, and largely acting like the previous film never happened- or actively retconning it. The result is a movie that feels less like the conclusion to a Star Wars trilogy, and more like the casualty of a behind-the-scenes battle between the visions of two diametrically opposed directors. Rise of Skywalker bends over backward to undo what The Last Jedi did, just as that movie subverted all the mysteries set up in The Force Awakens. But much more than its predecessor, Rise of Skywalker exudes petulance- like Abrams is mad someone played with his toys wrong, and his only remaining recourse is to scoop them all up and go home. Rise establishes in its opening crawl that the galaxy has received a mysterious transmission from Emperor Palpatine (something that would have been exciting to actually see onscreen. Rey ( Daisy Ridley) continues her training under General Leia Organa ( Carrie Fisher) while Finn ( John Boyega) Poe ( Oscar Isaac) and Chewie ( Joonas Suotamo) rendezvous with an alleged First Order mole who wants to feed them information. Kylo Ren ( Adam Driver) meanwhile, searches for the former Emperor, who he considers a threat to his power. From there, the story leaps at lightspeed between set pieces, from an alien version of Coachella to encounters with fantastic creatures that rarely last more than a few moments. As the movie progresses, it makes less and less sense. Rise takes great pains to hastily establish answers and payoffs for mysteries established in The Force Awakens, waving away plot points from The Last Jedi with repeated dumps of confusing dialogue. Events that should be monumental are immediately undercut or undone, without breathing room for the audience to absorb what's taking place. Characters you thought must certainly be dead pop up later inexplicably unharmed, while others simply keel over with little explanation. Uncanny CG puppets of familiar actors' younger selves haunt flashbacks to better times. What should be the movie's most emotional moments are undermined by the weight of exasperating absurdity. Unsurprisingly, Rise of Skywalker is- like both movies that came before it- gorgeous to look at, beautifully scored, and extremely impressive in a technical sense. But to watch this movie for the first time while still harboring any small hope that it might pull the whole conceited mess together in the end is to subject yourself to frustration, disillusionment, and emotional whiplash. There's a reason that hope existed at all: Flawed as it may be, The Force Awakens did a lot right in the world-building and character department. Beneath Episode IX's disregard for coherent storytelling are the bones- like the Death Star's sunken wreckage- of a compelling conclusion to this saga. Rey, Finn, Poe, and Kylo are great characters; what they lack are actual character arcs. Rey's life as a scavenger lends her some unique skills, for example, but she spends an inordinate amount of time in this movie simply wandering off, face vacant, while her friends are in danger. Or take Finn- these movies have never actually bothered to dig into his past as an indoctrinated Stormtrooper, and, in fact, Rise actively trivializes this backstory at a pivotal moment when it could have explored it further. The group's dynamic is strong when they're together, but fun banter isn't enough to cover for the fact that these characters have rarely spent actual time with one another onscreen or been fleshed out beyond the surface level. Leia's presence is unsettling. Granted, it's no one's fault that the great Carrie Fisher was unable to complete this journey with us. But her scenes in this movie are filled with nonsequiturs, dialogue that was clearly ripped from previous films' unused footage and then re-contextualized with new conversations written around them. Other legacy characters, like Lando Calrissian ( Billy Dee Williams) C-3PO ( Anthony Daniels) and Chewie, are treated with varying degrees of respect, and their inclusions are often irrelevant and occasionally nonsensical (you'll struggle to figure out why Lando pops up where and when he does, for example. And don't forget about Palpatine himself (once again played by Ian McDiarmid) who has indeed returned, and- well, let's just say you're going to have a lot of questions when it's over. Star Wars Episode IX: The Riser of Skywalker And forget about any of the less central characters; Rose ( Kelly Marie Tran) who was introduced in TLJ, is present, but has about as many lines as the background character played by an actor from Lost making a cameo. New faces like Zorii Bliss ( Keri Russell, whose face is never actually seen) and Jannah ( Naomi Ackie) get a few lines of dialogue each before being casually tossed into the blender and mixed into the background of the rest of the film. New creatures like the infantile puppet Babu Frik and the droid D-O (who turns out to be almost literally a kicked puppy) are charming, but lack depth. Like so much of what gets established in this movie, they're utterly pointless. That adds to the sense that Abrams is trying to cram the plot of two movies into the space of one. In a hypothetical alternate timeline where J. kept control of the whole trilogy, he could have left room between this film's abundant reveals and introductions for the characters to interact naturally and for the weight of emotional twists and turns to settle in before yanking the rug out from under audiences yet again. Instead, Rise rushes at breakneck speed to end each scene and get to the next, never stopping to savor any victory or process any loss or defeat. It adds up to a pale cover of Star Wars' greatest hits- dramatic lightsaber duel, ancient artifact scavenger hunt, epic space battle- chewed up and spit out as a series of loosely related vignettes connected by clumsy dialogue and nonsensical plotting. The icing on top is a layer of cloying, saccharine sentimentality that Abrams uses to messily spackle in the story's cracks. At one point the characters choose to rely on a plan that already failed them in The Last Jedi, and not only does no one acknowledge that- but it inexplicably works this time, because this movie's condescendingly optimistic tone demands that it must, continuity and logic be damned. At the same time, Rise gleefully plays fast and loose with rules and laws that earlier movies established decades ago, like Jedi and Sith powers, or the capabilities of "force ghosts. Rise even has its own version of the notorious Midi-chlorian- in other words, another new plot device that didn't need to be articulated in the first place getting over-explained to the point of self-parody. In the end, it all feels simply empty. It should never be so clear to audiences that something in the filmmaking process has gone so terribly wrong- that the people who made the first film in a trilogy apparently didn't bother to sketch out a plan for the second and third, and that the movies' directors had visions for the series' future that were so fundamentally at odds. Star Wars deserved better. Back To Top.

We think this movie stands out for: A lot or a little? The parents' guide to what's in this movie. As with whole  Star Wars  franchise, main tension here is between good and evil, light and dark. Characters discover nuances of humanity and how people aren't generally all one thing or the other. Story underlines idea that everyone has a choice about which moral code to believe in, which mission to accept. Your family/background doesn't determine your destiny. Promotes transformative power of hope, and importance of friendship, courage, teamwork, loyalty, trust, listening to others, faith. Positive Role Models & Representations Rey continues to be strong, capable, courageous, but this time also deals with inner conflict. She must decide whether to follow the path of the Jedi or indulge in her newfound sense of anger and frustration. Other female characters. including General Leia, Rose, and some new faces. are well represented making tough decisions, leading bravely, and more. Finn and Poe learn to lead together and to put mission above personal conflicts. Their friendship and teamwork fittingly rallies the Republic around helping Rey. First Order is depicted as mostly male and largely white, while Resistance is notably diverse both in skin color and in various species, with women in leadership positions. Tons of sci-fi action violence, both large-scale space battles/explosions and one-on-one duels, shoot-outs, tense chases/crashes. A few explicit but not bloody deaths: A non-human severed head is unceremoniously presented to the First Order (some greenish goop, but no red blood) a traitor is summarily executed, an entire field of Resistance forces is shown dead, a character's skin and face crumble/melt away, Kylo Ren kills and maims many enemies with his lightsaber. One character's wound is shown close-up; a skeleton is seen. Both sides sustain lots of casualties.  Spoiler alert:  Several primary and supporting characters are killed, and nearly everyone is injured at one point. A couple of key characters are presumed captured or killed. A few deaths will be extra emotional for audiences. Many weapons are used in addition to lightsabers: blaster guns, planet-killer weapons, bombs, grenades, daggers, arrows, fighter planes. An officer orders an entire fleet destroyed. A leader orders an entire planet destroyed. Creepy villain, dark/scary locations, and a couple of large, scary worm-like monsters. Frequent peril and danger. Arguments. Two characters continue to have an intense, supernatural bond that sometimes feels romantic. Poe comedically asks another character for a kiss two times. Several charged/longing looks. Embraces/brief kisses (both opposite-sex and, extremely briefly, same-sex. Infrequent use of insults and words of exasperation including "ass. damn it. hell. stupid, "shut up. etc. Nothing in the movie, but off camera there's an entire universe of merchandise available, from branded/themed apparel, board games, video games, accessories, housewares, action figures, Lego sets, food, toys, and just about anything else you can consume that can be a tie-in. Drinking, Drugs & Smoking What parents need to know Parents need to know that Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker is the ninth and final film in the four-decade-long Skywalker saga (and the third installment in the current trilogy.  Following the events of  Episode VIII: The Last Jedi,   the film focuses on the battle between the villainous First Order, led by Supreme Leader Kylo Ren ( Adam Driver) and the virtuous Resistance fighters, embodied by the last Jedi, Rey ( Daisy Ridley. Everything is on the line in this installment, which means the sci-fi action violence is ratcheted up a notch: You can expect even more major space battles, high-stakes destruction, tense chases/crashes, peril, injury, and fierce lightsaber duels (plus blasters, arrows, cannons, and other weapons. This movie feels a little more intense and darker than the previous two in this trilogy, with creepy villains and locations and a few explicit (but not bloody) deaths, including a beheading, a point-blank execution, and a body crumbling to bits.  Spoiler alert:  Several primary and supporting characters are killed, and a few of those deaths will be extra emotional for audiences. There are also some scenes with lots of flashing lights, which could be difficult for those with photosensitivity. While there's not a lot of romance, the film does include some longing looks, embraces, and a couple of kisses. Language isn't frequent, but you will hear "ass. hell. and "damn. Women continue to hold strong positions in the Resistance, and there are strong messages of courage, teamwork, hope, and loyalty. Subscribe User Reviews Parent of a 7, 11, 13, and 13-year-old Written by FowlerFan December 20, 2019 Adult Written by ibsuzy December 22, 2019 Amazing - Emotional This movie is open-ended which left me with a few questions. Overall, the movie was way better than I could imagine. Its one of my favorite Star Wars movies. Teen, 17 years old Written by Kwin123 December 19, 2019 What's the story? STAR WARS: EPISODE IX: THE RISE OF SKYWALKER starts off with the usual scrolling exposition: In a galaxy far, far away, what remains of the Resistance regroups after the devastating losses of  The Last Jedi, while Rey ( Daisy Ridley) trains with the Force and new Supreme Leader Kylo Ren ( Adam Driver) and the First Order look for a secret Sith lair that's broadcasting pro-Emperor Palpatine propaganda. Poe ( Oscar Isaac) Finn ( John Boyega) and Chewbacca continue on their mission to subvert the First Order and help Rey save the day. Kylo Ren attempts to lure Rey to the Dark Side, believing that their special supernatural Force connection means they're destined to share a throne and rule together. In battle after battle, the two forces fight for the future of the galaxy. Is it any good? Technically slick and impressively performed, this final installment is definitely entertaining, but the considerable fan service and nostalgic callbacks make it less epic than we might have hoped. Audiences will marvel at the elaborate set pieces, the plentiful Easter eggs, and the intricately choreographed battle sequences (the storyboarding must have been amazing. The talented stars are all back. even the late Carrie Fisher as General Leia Organa. Hopefully they were so bountifully compensated that they can now go on to long careers doing whatever film they want. It's telling, though, that of Driver's three big roles in 2019 (alongside Marriage Story and The Report) this is his least extraordinary. That's because, despite the buddy-adventure humor of the Poe-and-Finn storyline, the fascinating plot revelations (no spoilers here. and the Game of Thrones -style intrigue, the story and writing can occasionally become unwieldy as director J. J Abrams overstuffs the movie that signals the end of an era. Speaking for those who don't possess encyclopedic knowledge of every character name and subplot of the three Skywalker trilogies, it's possible to enjoy this film without total recall of the earlier movies. but those who do remember the meaning of particular characters, species, locations, and vehicles will feel extra rewarded. To spell those particulars out would be to spoil several applause-worthy moments, but if moviegoers have the time, they might re-watch The Empire Strikes Back, Revenge of the Sith, and The Last Jedi to maximize their understanding of the story in Episode IX. The best part of Rise of Skywalker might be the satisfying nostalgia, but it's ultimately about another central trio of friends with sketchy backgrounds (a former scavenger, a Stormtrooper, and a spice runner) who answered a higher calling for themselves, the Force, and the galaxy. Talk to your kids about... Families can talk about the violence in Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker. Do scenes of explosions and space battles affect you differently than those of close-up, one-on-one lightsaber duels and killings? Why do you think that is? What makes more of an impact: violence or loss? Why? How does this movie handle both topics? Who are the movie's heroes? How are they role models? Do they demonstrate character strengths such as  courage and teamwork? How is diversity. and a lack thereof. used to indicate the values of the opposing sides of the conflict in the Star Wars series? Why is it notable that the First Order has very little diversity, while the Republic has a lot of it? Talk about the themes from the previous movies that repeat themselves here. Why are issues of good vs. evil, mentorship, and so on so important to this series? How do they play out on-screen? What are your thoughts on the way the Skywalker Saga ended? What do you think happens in the future for the characters, the Force, and the galaxy.
