Just saw the movie tonight, and a couple nights ago for the first time, as my theater's playing it for Ghibli Fest 2019. I had to go by myself, as none of my friends like anime, but whatever. I've cried more watching this movie than any other movie I've seen. I stayed in my seat through all the credits not just because I wanted to hear all the music, but also because I couldn't stop crying and didn't want anyone to see me. This movie has seriously torn me up inside. I can't stop thinking about it, no other film has affected me like it. It's the best movie I've ever seen, I seriously love every second of it.
Before this film, the last masterpiece by Takahata Isao at Studio Ghili is My Neighbors the Yamadas (1999. 7 years later, in 2006, he began a new animation project which is this film, and everyone had to wait another 7 years to see his work which was claimed prior to the release date by Nishimura Yoshiaki (a producer of the film) that this work is "the best and last" by Takahata. I completely agree with Mr. Nishimura. The film has a minimalist style taking some resemblance to My Neighbors Yamadas, but more colorful, more poetic and picturesque, and more artistically soaring in visual style. The plot is simple and beautiful. The soundtrack is awesome.
In his career at Ghibli, Takahata has made just 5 animated feature films for 25 years (including Grave of the Fireflies) roughly a half as much as Miyazaki Hayao's works (9 films) but as the more time went by, the better and the more creative Takahata has been in making his works. And with Kaguya, he has reached his highest peak in the life of creation. In my own opinion, this film is as excellent as Miyazaki's Spirited Away in general: less symbolic but way visually better than Miyazaki's work.
And like Grave of the Fireflies or Only Yesterday, Kaguya's ending leaves some melancholy in audiences' mind, though it is so predictable. Perhaps it's the melancholy not only about the film, but also about a rare gem in animation which has gone far far away and would never come back, like Kaguya.

Even having understood its exceptional nature, this film took me a good amount of time to emotionally process and I took it upon myself consider its many themes. The result? I came to the conclusion this is a masterpiece of a film.
The Tale of the Princess Kaguya is far more mature than an R rated film and far more complex than the Oscar-bait films we receive year after year. This is a story of a girl having her happiness destroyed by others. It critiques patriarchy and even Feudal Japan tradition. It resonates on the human condition and both the beauty and pain brought about by life. It's heart-wrenching and tragic. It's beautiful and enjoyable. It will leave you unsure and uncomfortable, but in awe of its storytelling.
This film isn't afraid to add depth to its characters (especially its wonderful leading lady Kaguya) to present darkness and compelling themes in a medium still considered childish, and to proceed at a lengthy, but comfortable pace in order to properly explore its characters, themes, and storytelling. What we are left with is a multidimensional masterpiece that will likely be timeless.
Other objects of merit are the fantastic Japanese and English dubbing, the beautiful naturalistic art style, and the utterly spectacular soundtrack. This film, despite being well-received, hasn't received the circulation it deserves in the US. Buy this film today. You owe it to yourself to experience the emotional currents of Kaguya's tale.

A 15 anni dal suo ultimo film come regista, il cofondatore dello Studio Ghibli Isao Takahata torna al cinema Chi ha visto Una tomba per le lucciole potrebbe descrivere Isao Takahata come “ quello dei due che fa i film che dopo vuoi morire ”, e questo nonostante il suo Pom Poko parlasse di procioni coi testicoli giganti. Rispetto allamico e collega Hayao Miyazaki (insieme al quale ha fondato lo Studio Ghibli nel 1985) infatti, Takahata ha un approccio più intellettuale allanimazione, e un modo generalmente più schietto di utilizzarla per levarsi i sassolini dalla scarpa. A 15 anni dal suo ultimo film come regista, Takahata torna finalmente a firmare La storia della princpessa splendente, unopera intensa e sperimentale che ha richiesto ben otto anni di lavorazione. È stata proiettata in anteprima a Lucca Comics & Games, e viene distribuito da Lucky Red nelle sale italiane solamente dal 3 al 5 novembre. La storia, basata su un antico racconto popolare giapponese, parla di Okina, un anziano tagliatore di bambù che un giorno, tagliando un fusto luminoso, trova al suo interno una minuscola principessa addormentata. Ritenendola un dono degli dei, luomo la raccoglie e la porta con sé a casa, dove decide di crescerla insieme alla moglie. Principessa corre, gioca, insegue le rane, si arrampica sugli alberi – insomma vive liberamente la sua infanzia insieme agli altri bambini del villaggio – e cresce a vista docchio, come se ogni esperienza sviluppasse anche il suo fisico. La felicità di quel mondo semplice, però, le viene strappata quando il padre, che le ha fatto edificare un palazzo nella Capitale, decide che è abbastanza grande per diventare una vera dama. Lo spirito selvatico di Principessa viene così rinchiuso in una gabbia dorata dalla quale sembra impossibile evadere, a meno di non pagare un prezzo altissimo. La prima cosa che colpisce, del film, è sua veste grafica, che può ricordare – almeno a noi occidentali – lo stile delle stampe tradizionali giapponesi, le ukiyo-e. Il design è semplicissimo, fatto di linee in movimento e visi scarni, quasi privi di dettagli, che la regia e luso sapiente del colore trasformano in capolavori despressività. Non vediamo nulla di superfluo, sullo schermo, e per questo tutto quello che vediamo ha un peso, anche il dilatarsi di una pupilla, o il lieve tremore di una mano. Limpressione, durante il film, è quella di veder dipingere un enorme quadro. Questo continuo trasformarsi delle forme, inoltre, trasmette un senso di precarietà, come se la fiaba da un momento allaltro potesse crollare e rivelare un incubo. Dal punto di vista tecnico, si merita un elogio anche il sonoro, capace di emozionare anche con il semplice rumore di piedi nudi che corrono sui pavimenti di legno, o di un corpo che con un tonfo cade nella neve. La storia della principessa splendente è dunque unopera che suscita il piacere estetico, ma in cui lestetica non è fine a se stessa, anzi è un mezzo che fa emergere con grazia disarmante le bellezze e le brutture della vita umana, conferendo a entrambe uguale dignità e valore. I desideri di Okina e Principessa muovono la trama, e lo fanno senza che il regista interferisca mai con un atteggiamento giudicante. Se per esempio è vero che viene spontaneo prendere le parti della povera ragazza, e di conseguenza cercare nel padre che lha rinchiusa un nemico, questa semplificazione scema dinnanzi alla figura toccante di un uomo che ama davvero sua figlia, e crede che con questo amore riuscirà a proteggerla dalle insidie del mondo. È questa la ricchezza narrativa del film: il suo essere una favola maestosa e, nello stesso tempo, il r acconto quotidiano e intimo di una famiglia comunissima. Takahata sceglie, anziché di condannarle, di celebrare la fallibilità umana, la cecità collaterale dellaffetto, e la commovente, intrinseca imperfezione della vita. Potrebbe interessarti anche.
Ho visto questo film proprio due giorni fa! Che studio ghibli non sbaglia un colpo! Forse l'unico film che non mi è piaciuto tanto è Si sente il mare ma gli altri sono dei veri e propri gioiellini del cinema.
Spoilers As fantastic as the movie is (even tho i felt the suitors section was needlessly long) I'm glad the ending shot showed us the princess turning around one last time. The ending felt like a commentary on how, for celestial beings of these mythologies, the sorrow and love of human emotion are as inconsequential and fleeting as motes of dust. It would've broke me if she never turned around and challenged that idea, if just for a bit.

La strana bambina cresce molto rapidamente tanto da essere soprannominata dai ragazzi del villaggio "Gemma di bambù" per questa sua capacità di maturare repentinamente: in poche settimane riesce a camminare, a parlare e comincia ad aiutare l'anziano genitore nel suo lavoro. [10] Production [ edit] As a child, Takahata read The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter. He recalled that he struggled to relate and sympathize with the protagonist; to him, the "heroines transformation was enigmatic" and that it "didnt evoke any empathy from [him. 11] In 1960, Takahata was preparing for a potential adaptation for his employer Toei Animation, which eventually was abandoned. [12] After rereading the tale, he realized the story's potential to be entertaining, as long as an adaptation allowed the audience to understand how Princess Kaguya felt. Setting [ edit] Unlike other Sonic the Hedgehog media, the setting of the series is the world of Planet Freedom, which is split into two distinct realms: the Land of the Sky and the Land of Darkness. The Land of the Sky consists of an unknown number of continents that drift high in the stratosphere of the planet, all of them connected to a massive ice formation which also serves to anchor them to the planet's surface below. According to Knuckles, if this ice network was destroyed, Planet Freedom's rotation would hurl the Land of the Sky into outer space, undoubtedly killing everyone on it. The Land of Darkness is the actual surface of Planet Freedom, a post-apocalyptic wilderness with Robotnik as its sole living inhabitant. The Land of Darkness can only be accessed in one of two ways: by a whirlwind-like "portal" in the Land of the Sky, or via a warp zone, an extradimensional link between two points on Planet Freedom. Most of its terrain is untamed and mountainous, but a crumbling city serves as the location of Robotnik's empire. The city and terrain strongly imply that Planet Freedom is a post apocalyptic Earth that was built upon with floating islands, with certain landmarks suggesting that the ruins are those of New York City. According to Robotnik, a giant mecha named Metal Robotnik ( Black Eggman" in the original) has exiled him from his utopian city of Robotropolis ( Eggmanland" in the original) and sabotaged the Robot Generator, which will explode in less than a day. He asks Sonic to head to the Land of Darkness to stop it in exchange for the President and Sara's freedom. Once there, Metal Robotnik tries to stop them from reaching the generator. Knuckles the Echidna arrives and saves them both, and all three team up to destroy the mecha. Unbeknownst to them, Metal Robotnik is revealed to have been controlled by Robotnik, with Sara unwillingly in tow. The episode ends with the three heading to Robotropolis. 2 "Sonic VS Metal Sonic. Sonikku VS Metaru Sonikku. ( ソニックＶＳメタルソニック！！) March 22, 1996 September 7, 1996 After entering Robotropolis, Knuckles tries to fend off enemy robots while Sonic and Tails try to stop the generator at heart of the city. They arrive just in time, but when Sonic pulls the lever, the machine traps him and scans his body. Knuckles frees Sonic just as the machine crumbles to the ground, revealing Dr. Robotnik's newest robot, Hyper Metal Sonic. Dr. Robotnik appears in Metal Robotnik's remains and reveals he lured Sonic to copy his memories, personalities, and knowledge for Hyper Metal Sonic. Sonic and Metal battle, but Metal soundly defeats Sonic. Tails and Knuckles return to the Land of the Sky, where Tails learns that Metal is out to destroy the planet by digging into the ice caps that hold the Land of the Sky together, allowing lava to emerge and melt the ice. Sonic wakes up in Green Lake City and returns to the Presidential Palace, learning of Metal's goal from the President. Sonic, Tails and Knuckles go to the ice caps, where Sara is being held captive by Robotnik, planning to marry her so the two will rule over Planet Freedom after the Land of the Sky's destruction. Sonic encounters Metal, and the two have a long rematch. Tails manages to corrupt Metal's data, and Sonic critically damages him. During the clash, the President and Old Man arrive and are trapped in their aircraft, but Metal saves them. Sonic realizes that Metal does have emotions, as he was programmed with Sonic's personality and thoughts. Metal gets blown into a crack and falls into a subglacial volcano. Sonic reaches out his hand to save him, but Metal rejects it, telling him "there is only one Sonic" before being destroyed by the rising magma. Robotnik states he still has Sonic's DNA and can re-build Metal Sonic, but one of his missiles from the fight inadvertently blows up the disc containing Sonic's DNA. Knuckles hits Sonic on the head as revenge for Sonic accidentally stepping on him during the fight, and the two get into a chase, with all the others following behind. Production and release [ edit] The OVA series was produced by Studio Pierrot, Sega Enterprises and General Entertainment and directed and storyboarded by Kazunori Ikegami, with Mayori Sekijima and Masashi Kubota handling the story structure and script, Tsuneo Ninomiya designing the characters and Mitsuhiro Tada composing the music. It was originally distributed by Taki Corporation in Japan on a rental-only basis between January 26 and March 22, 1996 before being released for retail sale on May 31 of that same year. The series was licensed by ADV Films, who released an English-dubbed version as a single direct-to-video film as Sonic the Hedgehog: The Movie in September 1999 on VHS and DVD [1.
